Understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Mom’s Journey

Ten years ago, I was fed up with always feeling sick and tired. I was also frustrated with hearing that it was normal and that I would need to rely on bags full of medication for my various symptoms. Most of the time, the meds weren’t even effective, or they would work for a little while before I had to return to the doctor for something “better.” This sparked a major question: What was the cause, and how could I address it? I didn’t just want to mask my symptoms any longer; I wanted to know the cause, address it, and hopefully get rid of the symptoms naturally, so I no longer had to spend money on medication.

I discovered that there are no quick fixes, but I was ready to do whatever it took to own my health. This set me off on a fascinating journey that got me on the right track just in time for a vibrantly healthy pregnancy. I managed to throw away all of my chronic medications, and I was on top of the world with boundless energy, which finally led to me giving birth to a darling baby boy.

What I didn’t expect was for the whirlwind of motherhood to throw me completely off track. WOW, was I in for an out-of-control, taxi ride down the rocky slopes of sleep deprivation and burnout! After a breezy four months, my darling boy, as sweet as can be, no longer slept well. He slept often, but never for very long. Most nights were a nightmare of waking up every 20 minutes to an hour, during the days we would navigate crankiness and dealing with high fevers every time he cut a new tooth. This went on for more than two years. When things improved somewhat, I decided to take the plunge and have another baby.

A sweet baby girl joined the family. I was very fortunate that she had better sleeping habits, but my son still woke up a few times a night, addding to that, baby girl woke up twice or three times a night, sometimes a bit more when she was teething. My husband was constantly traveling for work. A few months after the birth of our second child, my now-toddler son was diagnosed with allergy induced asthma. We got into a routine, but just as I thought the fog was starting to lift, we decided to put our kids in a Christian school in the next town. This meant a lot of driving and managing my day on the go. In the mishmash of motherhood and the already debilitating exhaustion of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), I found myself living each blurry moment to the next. Enters survival mode! Long gone were the days of making wise choices and giving my body what it actually needed to navigate this new journey of early parenthood. However, I must say that two things kept me going: prayer and my daily barley grass green juice. Even discovering this green juice was an answered prayer, so in the end, my Heavenly Father gets all the credit.

As they say, “This too shall pass.” And it did. When the children began sleeping better and were less dependent on me for everything I reassessed my life and realised I urgently needed to make drastic changes to be a more present wife and mom. I prayed for wisdom and strength to make the changes necessary to cope better and to get out of the CFS slump that I was in.

God was faithful as always. He answered my prayers and gave me the wisdom and strength to start implementing the necessary steps to change my health for the better, albeit slowly and steadily.

Since CFS/ME symptoms are made worse through stress and lack of quality sleep, I always felt it was impossible to make the necessary changes during a time when everything seemed like a messy blur. Looking back, I wish I had made small changes and wiser choices during those hard times so that I could’ve coped better. But all this has taught me valuable lessons that I want to share with other moms to help them.

If you struggle with severe fatigue, I would like to journey with you. Through my blogs, Facebook and Instagram platforms, and hopefully a future YouTube channel, I will be sharing how you can implement these small changes step by step so that you too can gain the energy and vitality to raise a happy, healthy family.

Yours in vibrant health
